I am Faical Boutlib, I am interested to study ecology and behaviours & cognition. I am also interested in molecular genetics studies. I am working on the metagenomic analysis and to establish the taxonomic profile of the microbial communities of the Barbary macaque microbiota and to understand how this is adapted to our environment. At the Laboratory, I analyzed the faeces of this macaque to know the level of stress at the places where there is logging of the Atlas cedar.
Perfectly mastering computer tools (GIS, R and SPSS), I work with Moroccan teams on the effects of land use (LULC) on land surface temperature (LST) using multi-temporal satellite data Landsat TM 5 and OLI 8 on the landscape dynamics on microhabitat in barbary macaques.
As a researcher in Costa Rica, I have further developed my communication, self-motivation and organisation skills, which I believe are crucial for promoting conservation projects. I represented and promoted Frontier's objectives and raised awareness through communication with people from various cultural backgrounds. I published reports to share the results and analysis of the scientific community. In addition, I reached the general public by writing concise newsletters and blogs and communicating with the locals.
Furthermore, I was actively involved in wildlife conservation outreach programmes, where I organised various conservation eco-festivals, talks in the lodges, and focus groups with local people. Moreover, I proposed and developed a project on tapir conservation, which involved constant monitoring and evaluation as well as collaboration with locals, NGOs and scientists. The project has strengthened the quality of the data collection as well as awareness about mammal conservation through organization of lodge talks using tapir as a flagship species. In addition, I have analysed collected data and produced reports to request local governing body development of new wildlife corridors. Another key skill that I have developed further over the last years is data handling and analysis using various software programs and languages. For instance, I used R and GIS to map data points for analysis of mammal and macaw data. I have also used Geographic Profiling (GP) as a model for invasive species in Britain (originally developed as a statistical tool in criminology using the spatial locations of linked crimes) and other Species Distribution Models (SDMs). I am very keen on learning new models and data handling techniques. I am currently developing my knowledge of Bayesian Statistics in R as well as GIS mapping, analysing data from various organisations.
